300 PRC Ballistic Performance
Trajectory & Wind Drift
The 300 PRC was purpose-designed to launch ultra-high-BC 30-caliber bullets at optimal velocities. With 225gr ELD-M bullets at 2810 fps, it remains supersonic past 1500 yards. The non-belted magnum case promotes better concentricity and accuracy compared to belted magnums like the 300 Win Mag. USSOCOM selected the 300 PRC as its Advanced Sniper Rifle cartridge.
Energy & Terminal Performance
The 300 PRC retains over 1800 ft-lb of energy at 500 yards with 225gr match bullets, making it devastating on large game at extended range. The cartridge bridges the gap between 300 Win Mag and 338 Lapua, offering near-Lapua external ballistics with less recoil and lighter rifles. Excellent for elk, moose, and large African plains game.
300 PRC FAQ
What is the effective range of 300 PRC?
With 225gr ELD-M bullets at 2810 fps, the 300 PRC remains supersonic past 1500 yards. For hunting, it is effective on large game well past 800 yards with appropriate bullet selection. The cartridge was designed specifically for extreme long-range precision shooting.
How does 300 PRC compare to 300 Win Mag?
The 300 PRC launches heavier, higher-BC bullets than 300 Win Mag can efficiently stabilize. It remains supersonic 200-300 yards farther and drifts less in wind at extreme range. The non-belted case also promotes better accuracy. The 300 Win Mag has wider rifle and ammunition availability and less recoil. See our 300 PRC vs 300 WM comparison.
Why did the military choose 300 PRC?
USSOCOM selected the 300 PRC for its Advanced Sniper Rifle program because it provides superior external ballistics compared to 300 Win Mag while using a modern non-belted case design. The cartridge was purpose-built to seat high-BC bullets at optimal depth without intruding into powder space, maximizing both accuracy and downrange performance.
How much does a 300 PRC bullet drop at 1000 yards?
With a 225gr Hornady ELD-M at 2810 fps and a 100-yard zero, the 300 PRC drops approximately 240 inches at 1000 yards under standard atmospheric conditions. This requires roughly 23 MOA of scope adjustment. Use the calculator above for your specific load and conditions.
