7mm PRC Ballistic Performance

Trajectory & Wind Drift

The 7mm PRC was designed by Hornady to be the ultimate long-range 7mm cartridge. With 180gr ELD-M bullets at 2850 fps, it remains supersonic past 1400 yards. The modern non-belted magnum case is optimized to seat ultra-high-BC 7mm bullets without sacrificing powder capacity, resulting in less wind drift than most 30-caliber magnums at extreme range.

Energy & Terminal Performance

The 7mm PRC retains over 1600 ft-lb of energy at 500 yards with 175gr hunting bullets, bridging the gap between 6.5 PRC and 300 Win Mag. It produces less recoil than 300 Win Mag while often matching its wind performance thanks to superior 7mm BCs. Excellent for elk, mule deer, and any situation requiring extended-range hunting capability.

7mm PRC FAQ

What is the effective range of 7mm PRC?

With 175gr ELD-X bullets at 2900 fps, the 7mm PRC remains supersonic past 1400 yards. For hunting, it is effective on large game to 800+ yards with premium hunting bullets. The cartridge was specifically designed for extreme long-range precision and hunting applications.

How does 7mm PRC compare to 7mm Rem Mag?

The 7mm PRC uses a modern non-belted case designed to seat high-BC bullets optimally. It pushes heavier bullets (175-180gr) at similar or higher velocities than 7mm Rem Mag, resulting in less wind drift and better energy retention at long range. The 7mm Rem Mag has much wider rifle and ammunition availability. See our 7mm PRC vs 7mm RM comparison.

Is 7mm PRC good for elk?

The 7mm PRC is exceptional for elk hunting. With 175gr ELD-X or bonded bullets, it delivers over 2000 ft-lb of energy at 400 yards with excellent penetration from high-sectional-density 7mm bullets. It provides 300 Win Mag-class performance with less recoil, making it one of the best modern elk cartridges available.

How much does a 7mm PRC bullet drop at 500 yards?

With a 175gr Hornady ELD-X at 2900 fps and a 100-yard zero, the 7mm PRC drops approximately 28 inches at 500 yards under standard atmospheric conditions. Use the calculator above for your specific load and conditions.
